Casa Son Vida is located in the Balearic Islands off Spain, on the Island of Mallorca. The 8,500 square-foot Casa Son Vida is a cooperation between three powerhouses: Luxury residential developer Cosmopolitan Estates, eclectic Dutch designer and founder of Mooi, Marcel Wanders, and award-winning Los Angeles, Switzerland and Hong Kong-based tecARCHITECTURE. With its retro synthetic vibe, the house clashes happily with its lush surroundings, but the interior, in its white-dominant serenity is much less startling, although fun and unexpected detail is found in every space. There is absolutely nothing ordinary in this house. This is the first of six villas planned for the Platinum Estates development by the just less than a year-old Cosmopolitan Estates. Casa Son Vida is currently not for sale but the other five are…Dream on!

From Cottam Hargrave: This family-centered 3800sf residence is located on five acres in the West Lake Hills area of Austin. The building site is located over 500’ into the property, enhancing both privacy and sight lines. Because of the steep slope and the desire to minimize level changes within the house, linearity dominates, dictating the structure to follow a limestone ledge on the property. This linear arrangement along the ledge forces the garage to be a part of the entry sequence, which indirectly becomes the icon of the house. On the adjacent facades, two very long and overlapping shed roofs further differentiate the form.

Thoughtfully designed exterior lighting highlights the varied textures of the materials adorning the home. These include rough-cut limestone, metal panels, and cedar cladding. A lap pool lies adjacent to the rear deck and a covered patio created by a cantilevered upper volume.

Floor to ceiling glass runs the length of the home, creating an open, transparent atmosphere inside. Sprawling, uncluttered public living spaces occupy the lower floors while bedrooms reside upstairs.

Some of the listing pics on today’s Maine estate could be turned into postcards, they’re that pretty. Sea Cliff commands a rocky outpost on Cape Elizabeth. The shingled home was built in 1915 and has four bedrooms. Large windows and decks offer views of the shipping channel and Portland Head Light. The rooms are large and gracious and many have their original brick fireplaces. This home was listed at $5.995 million a couple of years ago but now sits at $4.75 million.

On the outskirts of downtown Atlanta, within the bounds of an historic neighborhood, a traditional façade conceals the true modern nature of the Ansley Park Glass House. Architects Brian Bell and David Yocum recently completed a renovation of the home, which was originally built in 1910. From the rear, the dramatic nature of the added living space is immediately apparent. Rectilinear, double-height living spaces with floor to ceiling windows contrast the traditional forms at the front of the home.

A dark, smoky color palette both inside and out is countered by the extensive use of glass. The glass also provides the home’s residents with unobstructed views of the nearby Atlanta skyline. The most notable interior feature is a visually-lightweight central staircase, supported by stringers from above, which appears to float between living spaces.

This stark, geometric weekend villa designed by Mount Fuji Architects Studio overlooks the Pacific Ocean from a heavily vegetated mountainside in Izu-san, Japan. The simple form is composed of two long, narrow rectangles set perpendicular to one another with cantilevers at their respective ends. The architects explain that the architecture is, “perfectly autonomous itself, but at the same time seems to emerge as an underlying shape that the natural environment has been hiding. It’s abstraction of nature.”

Both the interior and exterior liberally utilize water-polished white marble. The reflective nature of the material lets the blue and green hues from the ocean and forest illuminate the interior and blend seamlessly. Furnishings are kept to a minimum in order to provide a meditative atmosphere where the architecture and views take center stage.
