Contrary to the downward arc traced by much of the country’s real estate market right now, the 16,000-square-foot estate on Basil road in McLean, Va., looks likely to fetch slightly less than double what it sold for just four years ago. The house was purchased for $8,727,327 in 2005, then the most expensive non-waterfront property in the area, and recently reemerged on the market for $17,777,777. The 3.5-acre complex has elaborate gardens, an indoor tennis court and a separate staff residence. The Colonial-style main house was built in 1999 and hosts a wine cellar, music room and home theater, wood-paneled library and a rec room for the kids.

Modern Mediterranean-style homes carry the ubiquity of palm trees in South Florida, but the $12 million estate at 325 Cocoplum Rd. stands apart from it’s newer counterparts with an antique, old-world veneer and subdued luxury embellishments. The 6-bed/5.5-bath home has 8,810 square feet situated on just an acre of waterfront Coral Gables real estate. The classic lines of the home are echoed in a simple pool and sidewalks that cut through groves of fruit trees. The home is surrounded by a wraparound porch, scads of patio space and a private boat dock, while the interior is filled with dark woods, ornate wallpapering and marble floors.

With his Montauk beach house put on the market little more than a week ago, U.S. Marshals have quickly moved on Bernie Madoff’s other manors, today listing the Ponzi fraudster’s Palm Beach, Fla. estate for $8.5 million and naming a broker chosen to offload his New York City Penthouse. The feds estimate the apartment is worth $7.5 million, but the luxury penthouse is expected to sell for $9.9 million. Two well-known Manhattan agents, Anne Corey and Serena Boardman of Sotheby’s International Realty won the bidding war for the 4,000 square-foot Upper East Side apartment, a luxury duplex with a wraparound terrace offering panoramic views of the city that comes fully furnished with a $40,000 Steinway piano, $35,000 Persian rug, tea tables valued at $20,000 and TV newsman Matt Lauer as a neighbor.
Tony Owen Partners participated in a unique collaboration when designing “Bill’s House,” a conspicuously modern home located in a suburb of Sydney, Australia. The client, Bill, a concrete contractor, requested a design in which concrete was the primary building material in order to complete a majority of the construction himself. Accordingly, the architects responded with a dramatic design that balances rectangular volumes with massive, curved, white concrete walls. The curved walls are a reference to the sails of fishing boats on the Greek Islands, reflecting the client’s heritage. As requested, concrete is used wherever possible elsewhere in the home. A thick central wall is cast in textured concrete, and incorporates a tropical fish tank. The most striking use of the material, however, is in the central circulation space, which uses black polished concrete floors and a monolithic staircase cast from the same material. A transparent glass enclosure counters the heavy concrete and bathes the space in light throughout the day. The ground floor is kept light and open with floor to ceiling windows that open onto a patio, pool, and terraced garden.
The Hoff has relisted his Encino home, which is apparently filled to the gills with marble, wrought iron and gold records. The “Jump in My Car” star briefly put the home on the market for $5.95 million last year, but the 5-bed/5.5-bath estate but no buyer took the bait. Hasselhoff and then-wife Pamela Bach bought the home from actor John Goodman for $1.98 million in 1996 and recently relisted the home for $4.195 million. The Colonial-style mansion sits on a gated, tree-lined 1.5-acre lot and comes with a pub room, gym, media room, tennis court, Bosch and Viking kitchen appliances and a double-height living room big enough for Kit

Between panoramic mountain vistas and views of the Pacific, the contemporary home on Mesa Road is a short drive from the San Francisco Bay area, but beyond the reach of the bustle of busy city life. The 3,000 square-foot, 4-bed/3-bath home is elongated and spacious, spread amongst a five-acre lot and incorporated into a low profile swelling that keeps its surroundings as the central focus of the Bolinas home. An infinity-edge lap pool extends the horizon outside the $2.9 million home, reflecting nearby Stewart Point. The warmth of the stucco exterior is mirrored indoors through light wood flooring, trim and cabinetry and natural, earthy upholstering.
