There were the black loafers, the spangled glove, the red jacket, the aviator sunglasses, the black fedora, the epaulets, the tassels, the sparkles, the errant curl. Crazed fan or not, it’s hard (if not impossible) to argue that Michael Jackson’s influence on fashion has not been tremendous, pervasive, and, at times, downright irritating. He’d been making headlines for decades for his career moves and his curious personal life–and no doubt his recently sold-out tour–but with his passing on Thursday, we simply want to honor his dedication to the weird and the wild in the world of fashion, something he loved just as much as the music we’re playing again and again.

Michael Jackson’s shopping trips were famed and fabulous events, sometimes impromptu and other times the high-voltage star affair you’d see in the tabloids. Who could forget his $6 million shopping spree on objets d’art with a reporter by his side for the 2003 documentary “Living with Michael Jackson”? Dressed to impress, Jackson blew into Harrod’s in 2005 and dropped $150K in a half hour. In the year following his unusual choice of pajama-bottoms-plus-armband when arriving to face child molestation charges, he snuck to Topshop for a midnight spree. We took a close look inside his closet when Neverland Ranch memorabilia was bundled into 1,000 lots for auction this year. The King of Pop hung onto his collectibles when he reached an agreement with Julien’s Auctions. We’re glad he did.

We tip our black fedoras and take off our glove(s) to the never-outdone Michael Jackson. Sequins or not, you keep on shining.

Diddy Recalls Having His ‘Mind Blown’ By ‘Thriller’ Video

“The first time I saw the ‘Thriller’ video, I was waiting for it. It was the premiere â€” they showed you the making of and all of that,” he told MTV News over the weekend in Los Angeles. “And it was something that everyone had their VHS tapes â€” I think it was Betamax tapes back then. You had to wait for it and you taped it.”

Diddy said that Jackson’s videos always left his “mind blown” thanks to their use of cutting-edge technology and over-the-top plots. In fact, they weren’t just videos; they were, in many cases, mini-movies. “It’s like your mind was blown,” he said. “It’s the definition of having your mind blown. Michael Jackson is the truest definition of having your mind blown.”

Of course, Jackson wasn’t just known for his videos. He also became known for the moonwalk, his signature dance move that over the last two-plus decades has been imitated but never matched. So, does Diddy have his moves down? “I ain’t gonna lie,” he said. “It ain’t really that nice. I need to get it right for Michael, in honor of Michael.”

If America is the land of opportunity then the ‘Net is the digital dimension of the opportunist. So when it was confirmed that Michael Jackson passed away yesterday the world mourned and then all the amateur t-shirt designers across the globe hopped on their computers and designed lame “R.I.P. MJ” tee shirts for profit. Anything for a buck.

Unlike the rest of the bootleg tees flooding theÂ internets Neff‘s “Long Live the King” gets the StreetLevel co-sign. The skate/surf brand does justice to the King of Pop’s memory by taking his silhouettetes from the “Smooth Criminal” and “Billie Jean” videos and immortalizing them in dramatic black and white. Our only question is, how the heck did they make these that fast?
