Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 line under the Adidas brand is synonymous with the activewear meets streetwear style. For fall 2010, Mr. Yamamoto introduces a collection that could surely move from the gym straight to the streets and vice versa. Slim silhouettes are almost non-existent to make sure comfort and movement are well accommodated. While some looks and pieces are too grand for casual wear, other items such as some of the trousers, tops, and jackets can stand on its own. The more dramatic pieces such as the sleeveless jacket cape or the PVC like long rain parkas and skirts are surely for the more daring types. Overall, its what we could expect from Yamamoto, a blend of the avant-garde mixed in with the styles of the athletically inclined.

Last Wednesday, Yohji Yamamoto and Zinedine Zidane reprised their cameo roles in Y-3’s Spring/Summer 2010 runway show during New York Fashion Week at the label’s collection launch and Fall/Winter 2010 preview in Paris. The campaign to kick start Spring/Summer 2010 develops upon the collection’s tie-in with FIFA World Cup this year. As soccer is a quintessential element to the collection, the campaign is captured with the simplicity of a team portrait, with Zidane heading up a team of models sporting gear representing the eight countries with soccer federation sponsored by adidas. Performance, luxury, and innovative style are incorporated into one of the biggest sporting events of 2010 with Y-3’s decree for being uncompromising on all ends.

Aside from the launch of Spring/Summer 2010 collection, the event also marks the preview of Y-3’s Fall/Winter 2010 campaign. Continuing on the Y-3 tradition for pushing the design envelop with creative materials and stream-lined, avant-garde styles, the upcoming collection which will be showcased in full during New York Fashion Week on Feb. 14 challenges the dichotomy of tradition and future.

The Fall/Winter 2010 collection takes design cues from classic shapes and silhouettes but crafts them from innovative and technical performance material. Fitted blazer with contrasting color and material are topped off with heavily knitted scarfs and worn with roomy black wool pants with juxtaposing grey knit panels; a lengthy shearling leather pea coat and worn with navy sweat pants. Layering stays essential and relevant as classic menswear pieces are worn with technical sportswear– blazers over hooded windbreakers, military-inspired plaid jackets over hooded sweatshirts and thick sweat pants with knitted or tapered legs. Even the materials used keep in line with the theme as both technically advanced Kevlar and merino cashmere make appearances in the collection.

In terms of footwear, traditional sporting styles such as the all-time favorite hi-tops pop with strong bright colors such as orange and purple accenting a sleek, futuristic silver upper. The use of subdued classic palette of navy, brown, black and greys with eye-catching shades keep in tune with the choice of color in the apparel collection, drawing the entire Fall/Winter 2010 into a harmonious sarotrial ring.

Check out even photos and a quick preview of what’s to come for Fall/Winter 2010, and stay tuned with Freshness as we bring you Y-3’s fashion week coverage during New York Fashion Week.
